English VersionWho are you?

We are a team from the University of Québec in Montréal that includes a professor in History and cinema theory (Viva Paci), three students from the master’s degree “Cinema and images in movements” (Menguizani Assih, Martin Bonnard, Charlotte Jutras-Marion) and a student from a research and creation’s master degree on experimental media (Radhanatha Gagnon).

We participated in the International Documentary Film Festival, Ambulante, in Mexico in the city of Puebla during the month of march 2013. We organized a workshop about documentary creation and webdocumentary forms, working around the figure of Chris Marker.

This is the first time a web documentary workshop is introduced to the Ambulante Festival, how did you get to organize and lead it?

We proposed this project to the festival; it was directly linked with the research themes and interests of professor Viva Paci, who leads a new research group on web documentary.

This kind of production being little known, the project seemed to be a good way to initiate people to the specific cinematographic language open by the web documentary form.

Why did you choose to work on Chris Maker’s filmography?

It was necessary to give a certain form to our project, with a theme, in order to have a coherent web documentary, and to give a background, documents to support the steps we created to lead the differents documentary issues. We chose to get inspiration from the retrospective presented by Ambulante’s festival on this cinema director and we benefitted from Profesor Viva Paci’s participation who is a Chris Marker’s cinematography specialist.

What were the participants profiles?

The majority of the workshop participants were in their 20’s and were already interested in cinematographic production. They were all aware of the artisanal making process of a movie and were even starting studies in this field. Curious about Chris Marker’s Works, the participants were enthusiastic about the idea to work with it in their own process of creation. They wanted to experiment the possibilities offered by this cinematographic medium.

How do you feel about these days of workshop? How was it? Did you succeed in doing what you wanted? How did the participants react to the workshop?

The workshop went on really well and we hope it would be followed by other ones. The priceless collaboration of the festival, particularly of the programmer, Mara Fortes, and of the Universidad de Las Americas de Puebla (UDLAP), helped us a lot and contributed  to the success of the workshop.

In spite of the difficulties linked to the language (the workshop was presented in english) we developped a beautiful energy within the group, based on mutual assistance.

Web documentary is not a very well known and produced format in Latin America, what do you think about its future in Mexico?

We do not have an overall vision of web documentary uses in Mexico, so we can’t answer precisely. But we would like to point out that Ambulante, in this 2013 edition, have been especially interested in the new documentary issues. A serie of meetings called “new digital narrative for documentary” and the existence of our workshop are proofs of this interest.
